Somaliland Condemns the Dacawalay Tragedy
The Minister of Internal Security of Somaliland, Hon. Abdalle Mohamed Arab, speaking on behalf of the Somaliland government, has strongly condemned the atrocities allegedly committed by the Liyuu Police forces in Dacawalay, a locality within Ethiopia's Somali Region. The Minister denounced the violence as a violation of human rights and an affront to the principles of governance.
In his statement, Minister Arab expressed deep sorrow for the reported massacre targeting pastoralist civilians, an act that goes against the values of humanity and regional cooperation.
Traditional Leaders Abducted Amid Peace Efforts
Adding to the distress, the Liyuu Police are reported to have abducted traditional leaders from Somaliland who had traveled to Dacawalay to mediate peace and resolve ongoing tensions. This abduction, described as a blatant transgression, undermines the efforts to promote stability and peace in the region.
Minister’s Strong Words of Condemnation
Minister Arab emphasized the Somaliland government’s unwavering condemnation of the actions of the Liyuu Police. He stressed that the atrocities and the abduction of peace mediators represent a severe breach of international norms, holding the perpetrators accountable for the resulting consequences.
Ethiopian Somali Region's Response
The President of the Somali Region of Ethiopia has reportedly expressed regret to Somaliland for the tragic events in Dacawalay, acknowledging the need for justice and reconciliation.
Bilateral Efforts for Resolution
The Somaliland government has reached out to Ethiopia’s Federal Government, with whom it shares significant security and political ties. Somaliland has formally communicated its concerns over the incident, urging Ethiopian authorities to address the violations committed by the Liyuu Police. Discussions between Somaliland and Ethiopia are scheduled to take place tomorrow along the border to address the grievances and seek a resolution.
